Steve,
Thanks for your help - all three of us made it up Sunday, July 18th.
Your book was invaluable.

"I just couldn't
put it down. The bonus illustrations, maps and pack checklist are phenomenal"
Terry
Michaels; First time climber.

Steve,
"As I sit here at my desk in Massachusetts, the mountain seems so far away. The
memory of many months of planning, and the many hours of strenuous effort are already
quickly fading. I think I have read your book more times since my climb than before. It is
helping me re-live and stay in touch with the reality of what I have just done. I consider
your book a permanent part of my climbing experience. Thank you for your efforts."

Steve,
Thanks so much for writing your excellent book on climbing Mt.
Shasta by the Avalanche Gulch Route. I learned so much reading this
book that I was really prepared both equipment/safety wise and
mentally for the summit attempt. My 16 year old son and 6 other
friends safely summited last weekend June 16th. This has been a
super achievement for us and much of it was possible due to your
thoughtful book. Much success to you in the future.

Steve,
first off, thanks much for your book. Just got back from a trip to
the mountain and without it, I would've been at a severe
disadvantage. Me and my buddy made it to Helen Lake, but due to my
relatively out-of-shape 42-year old body and really high winds, that
was as far as we made it... Anyway, thanks again for your book.

Steve,
Thanks for writing such a great book! Received it by mail yesterday,
started reading in the evening, and couldn't put it down until I
finished. Made it to Helen last year with my 10 year old son. Going
solo to summit next month - feeling fairly confident (and better
informed!).

Steve,
Thank you very much for Mt. Shasta Climber's Guide Update. It has
been very helpful. By the way, I purchased your book, "Climbing Mt.
Shasta" and I read it. I like the way you wrote and it was very
useful. You are the best! Take care and God bless you.

Steve,
I received your book a couple of weeks ago. It is a nice touch that
you autograph each copy ordered from your web-site. I am enjoying
the book. I like the way you express your enjoyment of the climb and
in being outdoors, while cautioning all to be very wary while in the
wilderness. Too many fail to heed proper warnings...

Hi Steve:
I just finished reading and then re-reading your book "Climbing Mt.
Shasta". I truly enjoyed it and it seemed to provide information on
every facet of climbing Mt. Shasta. A friend and I plan to climb Mt.
Shasta in mid September and will probably use it every leg of the
journey.

Steve,
Thanks so much for the help. Reached the summit via Avalanche Gulch
at approx 10:45 am on Saturday. Your book was very informative as
well. All involved (there were six of us) owe you a great deal of
appreciation. Thanks again.

Steve,
I made the summit on my first attempt this past weekend. Your book
was perfect for a first-timer like me and the e-mail updates were
extremely helpful as well. Just wanted to thank you and I'll be sure
to recommend you to anyone considering the climb.

Steve,
You did a great job with your book. I personally am grateful for
it...

Steve, I bought your Shasta guide before my first
climb in July 2000 and highly recommend it to anyone planning to
climb Avalanche Gulch the first time. I returned with my climbing
buddies in June 2002 for our second trip to the top and we
successfully summited Rainer in August. We plan on returning this
summer for a glacier climb on the northside with Shasta Mt. Guides
which we located on your website. Thanks to your book, this website
and the majestic volcano Shasta I have definitely become a convert
to the sport of mountaineering.

Steve Lewis
" I attended your presentation on your book and climbing Mt. Shasta given at the
Barnes and Noble book store in Chico. CA.. I purchased the book and found it very
informative and useful in my first ascent of Shasta this Last Aug. 23...
Steve,
Just a quick note to say thank you! Our group of eleven
climbed the mountain on August 15 and 16. The entire group along with your book made it to
the top. We followed your suggestions and had a great time."

"...Thanks again, I've already recommended your book to several
of our friends."

Steve:
"I just summited Shasta on 8/23. It was an awesome climb. Your book really prepared
me for the many challenges that we would face. I am grateful that you took the time to be
so concise. I can't imagine anyone thinking of climbing Shasta without reading your book
first! I am sure that the many people that we saw turning back didn't know what your book
could have done for them. Another unfortunate man should have read page 111. It seems that
he glissaded down from the Red Banks with his crampons on. Just to the right of the Heart,
he caught a crampon in the ice and badly fractured his leg. His 8 hour rescue effort could
have been avoided if he had taken the time to read your book."

"...your book is actually what helped inspire me, however it's
been so long
since my last trip that lost contact with all my hiking ..."

Reviews &
Testimonials...
“When I first
picked up Steve Lewis’ guide book Climbing Mt. Shasta, I asked
myself why in the world would someone write a guidebook on just
one route? Typically, a guide book will try to show most of a
particular area’s trails or climbs. After pondering this, I
realized that the Avalanche Gulch route on Mt. Shasta is
probably one of the most climbed routes on 14,400 foot peak in
the United States. More people have been injured or killed on
this route due to poor information than any other on the
mountain. Steve Lewis’ book dedication gives a clue to the
book’s purpose “I dedicated this book to the memory of all
persons who have been injured or lost their lives on Mt. Shasta.
Hopefully, the information presented here will make future
climbers aware of the hazards of mountaineering.”
This is unique for it is the most
completed guide book I have seen anywhere. The information
presented includes climbing techniques, weather, geography,
flora, fauna, history safety, gear, and, of course, the route
itself. Climbing Mt. Shasta is not so much a guide book as it is
an introduction to mountaineering. I hope other guide book
writers will pick up on Steve’s idea, and write books that are
as complete as this one.” Northern California Trail
Magazine; Chico, California

"It is one thing to
receive the many gifts the mountain can give, as my friend Steve
has. An even greater thing is to share and teach that knowledge
to others. Keep up the good work.
"Lou
Whittaker, Expedition Leader & Rainier Mountain Guide, Author "Memoirs of A
Mountain Guide"

"His book is more than a guide book;
it's well organized and loaded with comprehensive information
written for anyone planning to climb the mountain. You should
hurry out and buy a copy immediately."
Marvin Tolbert, friend, skier, and fellow climber

"I've
found Steve's book to be the best reference available for preparing anyone to safely and
successfully climb to the summit of Mt. Shasta using the Avalanche Gulch Route."
Robin Kohn, Outdoor Recreation Specialist, Mount Shasta City

“The publication, which includes
maps and color photos, is more than a how-to-climb-the-mountain
guide, however. It gives a detailed account of the Mountain’s
characteristics and the popular Avalanche Gulch route that most
first time climbers use.” Mail Tribune;
Medford, Oregon

"Lewis'
book is an excellent resource and contains much needed
information that should prevent the type of accidents and
injuries that we deal with on the mountain. A better prepared
climber saves time, money, and unnecessary dangerous exposure to
SAR team members. I highly recommend reading the book! "
Sgt. Dave Nicholson, Siskiyou Co. Sheriffs Dept. Search and
Rescue Coordinator

“What an
exciting book Steve Lewis from Mt. Shasta has written!
This book was written specifically for those who are
motivated to climb Mt. Shasta for the first time. It
contains detailed information for novice climbers and
for experienced mountaineers who dream of reaching the
Summit using the Avalanche Gulch route. But for those of
us who don’t feel the desire to go to the top, this book
is packed with loads of information about the mountain’s
legends, lore, fact and fiction. Steve’s really done his
homework. There are maps, charts and exact guidelines
for your trek to the top. The hazards of mountaineering
are thoroughly stressed. Everything you may need to
reach the “Summit” is explained in detail.
Kevin Cornwall, Photographix Publishing Service

I enjoyed some of the
quotes used, such as, “Concentrate on your footing, not
on your fear.” Also, “Only conquer on foot what you feel
you can conquer in your mind.” Good advice for just
walking on flat ground!!!! Climbing Mt. Shasta is going
to be an absolute hit!! Well done, Steve, and
congratulations on going even farther than the “Summit.”
